Sweet Potato Processing Plant in Meru

Supplied and installed by DK Engineering, the plant includes a bakery and a milling plant and has potential to produce up to 21 by-products including bread, cakes, crisps, sweet potato flour among other products.

Funded by the European Union through the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) and run by Meru Friends Sacco, the plant started its operations in January 2018 and has since been changing fortunes of farmers who now earn approximately Ksh 2,500 per 50kg bag of orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. They earlier relied on brokers who would buy the commodity using extended bags of up to 80kgs at as low as Ksh. 2000.
